JANE IMPATIENTLY WIPED the tears from her cheeks and stood up. “It’s nothing. I—I forgot to close my bedroom door this morning and Thurgood got in here. I guess he likes houseplants as much as I do.”

She’d come home to a scene out of a horror movie—at least to her it looked like Nightmare on Winston Street. Her plants lay on the floor, yanked violently out of their pots, their roots exposed, dirt strewn everywhere. At first, she’d tried to save them, scooping up the dirt with her hands. But then emotions had overcome her and she’d sat down on the floor and cried.

“He chewed on all of them, except for the philodendron. Of course, that’s the only poisonous one.” Jane bent down and picked up Regina, the burro tail. Fresh tears pressed at the corners of her eyes. “I’ve had this plant since I was eleven.”

Will took the plant from her hand. “Isn’t there something we can do?”

“Sure. I can repot them or take cuttings and root them.”

“Then why are you crying?” he asked.

Jane covered her face with her hands and sobbed. “I—I don’t know.” In truth, she did know. She knew that with every day that passed, it became harder and harder to ignore her growing feelings for Will. He’d eaten her awful cooking and tolerated her questionable decorating taste. He’d teased her out of her grumpy moods and had done his best to encourage her in everything she did. He knew her better than any man on the planet, and yet she still couldn’t allow herself to love him.

She bit back a sob, then let her hands drop to her sides. Will knelt in front of her, staring into her face, his brow etched with concern. “I’m sorry. I didn’t know Thurgood would do something like this. I’ve never had any plants around. He loves to dig outside. I guess I should have known.”

Jane fixed her gaze on his mouth and all she could think about was how much she wanted him to kiss her again. Everything always seemed so much better when she was caught in his arms, his mouth taking possession of hers. She swallowed hard and clutched her hands in front of her. “I—I should have closed the door.”

“Tell me what I should do,” Will said. He gently rubbed his hands up and down her calves, a comforting caress that she found far too tantalizing. For a moment, Jane closed her eyes and tried to summon her resolve, tried to put up the barriers that had kept her safe from her desires.

“You don’t have to do anything,” Jane replied in a weak voice.

“I want to. Just tell me what you want me to do.”

She groaned inwardly, knowing that her answer would have nothing at all to do with plants. Why was she fighting so hard? For once in her life, she had the chance to experience real passion, to be with a man who represented her ultimate sexual fantasy. And she still couldn’t bring
